“For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out; and the evil I desire not to do, I keep on doing. My decisions, such as they are, do not result in actions.” The lyrics for “Out of Love,” had to be explicit and over the edge to bring attention to a subject that churches and youth groups often refuse to discuss. The controversial issue of lust, though an awkward and oftentimes unbearable topic of conversation, is an issue that needs to be brought into the light and dealt with. The reality is, it’s a struggle that can take control of our lives, affecting what we see, hear, and allow ourselves to take in on a daily basis. As sinful people young and old, we all at times deal with seemingly uncontrollable hormones and tempting situations. The song reveals two outcomes of these conditions. One states how the indulgence of sexual acts of pre-marital or extra-marital relationships allows Satan to gain a foothold in our lives. The guilt and shame we feel afterward, so chokingly painful, can drive us away from the Lord. With the other outcome, though you still feel the same guilt and shame, you also see “The Light” at the end of the tunnel. The bridge of this song, which is spoken, gives the song truth and hope, stating that even as we continue to fall into our own stupid actions, Someone is there to pick us up again and again. For all of us, the One who forgives and helps us to get back on our feet is Jesus Christ!
