Jesus shows us the way-- Servanthood

Opener:
Skit-Driver in traffic and late for work. Construction, and yet still lets other cars go in front of him?

John 13:1-17 Scripture of Jesus and His disciples eating together and Jesus washed their feet.

What is the meaning of this scripture?
What does Peter mean when he talks about washing his hands and his head as well?

Lesson taught HUMILITY

  • Washing only done by lowest of servants.
  • He was the ultimate Leader yet the most humble servant.
  • Notice He does not state that Judas will betray him even though He knew yet he washes his feet as well.
  • We are to portray humility, love, and servant hood even in the face of our betrayer or during persecution.

    SERVANTHOOD

  • Washed their feet and did what the most lowest person did.
  • Served others
  • Did not ask for anything in return.

    BAPTISM

  • (Peter)--He must have the bathing of entry
  • Baptism is the bathing of entry of the church just as the washing of feet was the bathing of entry into a house.
  • Not that you can't be saved but if you don't get baptised because you are too proud, then your pride will shut you off to Heaven's gates.

EXTEND TEACHINGS AFTER HE WAS GONE

  • Jesus was preparing them for service for after He was gone.
  • He set the example for His disciples and for us.

What does it mean to be authentically Christian?
What does it look like to be Christlike?
What does it mean to be a servant?

We are to be servants to other and humble so others can see Christ in us. Don't just tell them about Christ, Show them!!!!! The world cannot always understand one's profession of faith, but it can understand service.
    -Ian Maclarean

We don't have to do miracles to be like Christ but just be servants and humble ourselves as He did and love others. Jesus doesn't just preach servanthood, but models it as well. So should we.
