Synopsis: A good programming idea, however, can turn sour, leaving leaders asking, "What was wrong with my idea? Why didn’t my specially-designed tool work?" Often, it’s not the program that’s off, but the timing. Here are two diagnostic questions to ask before you launch any new program(s).

Diagnostic Questions For Effective Programming

Though programs shouldn’t define the totality of our ministries, they can be tools for us to use in reaching and helping students. Like a quality carpenter who has an array of tools at his disposal in order to build a first-class house, we, too, should stock our tool belt with sundry programs, all able to aid us in accomplishing the mission Christ left us: to make disciples of all nations!

A good programming idea, however, can turn sour, leaving leaders asking, “What was wrong with my idea? Why didn’t my specially-designed tool work?” Often, it’s not the program that’s off, but the timing. Here are two diagnostic questions to ask before you launch any new program(s):

1. WHERE’S THE INTEREST?

Programs typically don’t create a thirst; they are generally a response to it. So tap into existing interests with seed ideas, allowing grass-roots development. Avoid trying to generate interest; instead, discover it.

2. WHERE’S THE NEED?

Not all interests are legitimate needs. And in church ministry, especially youth work, getting sidetracked with off-mission programs depletes our energy and blurs our focus. Discerning true needs takes guts, but makes all the difference.

So when do you act? Your best timing for utilizing a new tool is when interest meets need! Look for the merging of what people like and what people need. When you get alignment in these two areas, chances are high your new program will be successful.
