The Present
What do an aspiring actress, a two-timing
ex-boyfriend, a broken hearted girl, a nosy mother, and an eccentric movie
director have in common? Their lives collide in this True Love Waits themed
play. Borrowing the time-jump style that typified Pulp Fiction, this collection
of stories will communicate themes of abstinence, the lie of safe sex, STD's,
singleness, and waiting for true love that comes from God. The scene below takes
place after the prom, as a teenage girl realizes the mistake she has made by
giving her virginity away...
(Spot on Greg and Joanie, far
stage left, sitting in a "car"-two chairs. He has on a
tuxedo and boutonniere, she has her prom dress, a corsage, and a
ring. A cassette tape and the blue and white package from Scene 2
are on the floor between seats. Each has a prom flower. Joanie is
staring off, angry.)
GREG
Here she comes now. Time to get out.
JOANIE
Where are you going?
GREG
Don't worry about it.
JOANIE
I can't help but worry about it. I love you.
GREG
I'm not your concern any more.
JOANIE
Can't we talk about this some more?
GREG
We've been talking about it for two hours. What do you think
you're going to accomplish?
JOANIE
I want to make things work out.
GREG
I don't think we can.
JOANIE
Is it because you think we won't work out... or because you
don't want it to work out?
GREG
Does it matter?
JOANIE
Yes, it matters.
GREG
(shrugs) I don't know.
JOANIE
Gosh, give me something solid to hold on to. Tell me you're in
love with some one else. Tell me you don't love me. If you still
care about me, you'll at least do me that courtesy.
GREG
Do you a courtesy? What happened to you and you're "I just
want you to be happy"? If breaking up is what makes me happy,
why are you fighting it?
JOANIE
(disgusted, giving up) Fine. You wanna scrap this relationship,
be my guest. But know this: I was willing to make it work. You're
the one who gave up.
GREG
Fine. I broke it off.
JOANIE
(takes off corsage) Take your flowers.
GREG
(takes off boutonniere) You take yours.
(Joanie takes off her
necklace.)
GREG
What are you doing?
JOANIE
Giving you your necklace back.
GREG
It's not my necklace.
JOANIE
(holds it out) Take it.
GREG
I'll just give it to someone else.
JOANIE
I don't care what you do with it.
GREG
Get your CD's out of here too.
JOANIE
Gladly. (grabs up CD's between the seats) Where's the Stones
CD?
GREG
At my house. I'll bring it to school Monday.
JOANIE
(points to the wrapped box) That's mine too, isn't it?
GREG
(snatches the package) Uhh, it was.
JOANIE
I'd like it back, please.
GREG
I can't give it back.
JOANIE
Why not?
(Greg tucks the box in his
pocket.)
JOANIE
Greg, that's the most expensive thing I gave you.
GREG
And it will always be dear to me for that very reason.
JOANIE
Look... (hands him the CD's and flower) You can keep all this.
But I have to have that back!
GREG
You don't understand, do you? This is no longer yours.
JOANIE
You broke up with me. That's a gift for the man who doesn't give
up. The one I'll spend the rest of my life with.
GREG
Maybe you should have thought about that before you gave it
away.
JOANIE
(trying hard not to cry, whispers to self) What have I done?
GREG
Don't be so high and mighty about it. I don't have mine, either.
I gave it away a long time ago.
JOANIE
So mine meant nothing to you, did it?
GREG
No more than any of the others I've collected.
JOANIE
(frustrated and angry) Gosh, why did I ever fall for you?
GREG
I'm beginning to wonder the same thing. I thought you were
something really special. You've turned out to be a lot more trouble
than you were worth.
(Joanie slaps Greg.)
GREG
(after a beat, leans over Joanie, opens the car door) Get out of
my car.
(Joanie gets out of the car,
closes the door, and walks away from the car.
Blackout.)
