141. David & Goliath Dodgeball Submitted by: on January 18, 2000
Materials: ball
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Dodgeball rules apply...2 teams, one on each end of the playing area. 2 balls, heavy enough to throw a considerable distance but light enough that it won't hurt to get hit in the face or head. Balls are set in the middle of the 2 teams (this middle is also the boundary that the teams can't cross to the opposing side of). At least one referee is needed to call the game. Ref yells "Go!", players race for the balls and try to hit the opposing team members. The ball must hit the opponent before hitting anything else. A hit player is out for the round. If a player being thrown at catches the ball before it hits anything else, the thrower is out for the round. Sound familiar, okay here's the twist:
Prior to each round, each team designates a secret "Goliath" for that round. They only tell the referee(s) NOT their opposing team. At any time a secret "Goliath", is made out, buy being hit or having their thrown ball caught, the whole team goes down and the round is over.

Dodgeball is fun enough. But this extra twist is fun as the kids try to guess who their opposing "Goliath" is and go for them. Also, "Quick Rounds" get a winning team pumped...when they get their opposing "Goliath" right away.

142. Dizzy Stick Submitted by: on January 18, 2000
Materials: broom stick
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Dizzy stick is a very simple game but a lot of fun. My students played this game every free time they had at our last retreat. Take a broom stick and hold it above your head and then stare at the end of the stick above your head. Now spin around as many times as you can as fast as you can. Then toss the stick down. Now the object of this game is to run over to the stick and jump over it without falling down. If you jump over the stick without falling down you get a point for every time you spun around. This is a simple game but it is a lot of fun and everyone will get a good laugh out of watching each other try to get to the stick and jump over it when they are so dizzy.

143. Dragon Dodgeball Submitted by: on January 18, 2000
Materials: ball
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Have the entire group make a circle. Pick four to five people for each team. The first team goes into the center of the circle and forms a line by attaching their hands to the waist of the person in front of them. The people who make up the circle throw the ball at the "dragon", trying to hit the last person below the waist. Once hit, the last person returns to the outside circle and players continue to hit the new person at the end of the dragon until there in only one person left and they too are hit. A new team then goes into the middle. Time each team to see which one can last the longest.

144. Spew Submitted by: on January 18, 2000
Materials: ALKA-SELTZER, carbonated drinks
Messy Rating: Need a towel or two     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $5.00

This one even goes with a lesson in Revelation about how God will spew the lukewarm out of His mouth. Get some ALKA-SELTZER and some carbonated clear drink... such as Sprite, 7UP, maybe Ginger Ale, or Squirt. Tell each of your participants to place a single ALKA-SELTZER underneath their tongue. Don't worry.. they won't be able to taste or swallow it with it under the tongue. Now... give them each a cup of the clear carbonated drink. Fill it with about 3 or 4 ounces. The OBJECT is to see who can hold it in their mouth the longest, but trust me, it will EXPLODE and SPEW out of their mouths! I wouldn't advise swallowing it. It won't hurt them but yuck. They must have at least a couple ounces in order for it to work... though it is not about how much they can "drink." It's about how long they can hold it. HAVE FUN!

145. Newspaper Hockey Submitted by: on January 18, 2000
Materials: newspapers, 'puck'
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Here is a good game that can be played with newspapers ... Newspaper Hockey. You will need quite a few newspapers depending upon the size of group. Use the newspapers, folded or rolled, as "hockey" sticks. Use ping pong balls or the practice, wiffle golf balls as the pucks. Set up goals (a "fellowship Hall" table or some other creative goals) and let the kids play hockey. No using hands to pick up "puck", only the goalie may touch the puck with anything other than the newspaper-hockey stick.

146. Task Relay Submitted by: on January 18, 2000
Materials: hat, paper slips
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

This game is a relay. Divide kids up into 2 teams. Have a volunteer stand about 15 feet in front of the line holding a basket or hat with each hand. In the basket are 10 or 12 (depending on how many kids you have) slips of paper with things the kids must do or perform. When we have done this game in the past, some of the items have been "Get your whole team to sing the Brady Bunch theme song with you," "Name 5 US Presidents" "Run around the church 5 times screaming "I Love Jesus" "Form a pyramid with everyone on your team" and so on. The papers can really say almost ANYTHING which is what makes this game fun. Be creative. The first team to finish wins.

147. Hug the Potholder Submitted by: on January 15, 2000
Materials: Pot and potholder
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: Under 5 minutes    Cost: $0.00

This is a great game, but it can only be played with people who have never played it before. Send a few people out of the room. Get the rest of the group to form a circle. Place the potholder in the center and give the pot to one person. Have one person come back to the room. Tell them that they must hug the potholder but they can't pick it up. They have to obey all the instructions of the group, but there is only one correct way to do it. The group should start to shout out instructions including often "Just hug the potholder!" The person wins when he hugs the person who is holding the pot!

148. underground church Submitted by: on January 10, 2000
Materials: paper
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

ok you take a bunch of paper cut it so their is a slip for every person in the youth group. (you should do this before youth group starts) then on two or more of the slips write communist and on one or two which ever you prefer pieces of paper write pastor. DONT LET THE OTHER KIDS KNOW WHO IS WHO. on the rest of the paper slips write: church members. then you turn allt he lights off or way down using the whole church the kids proceed to go out and hide or run and the communist chase then secretly acting like they are hiding two and then proceed to capture as many members of the church as they can and put them in prison the pastors can free the members and don't have to give their identity. but when the pastors are caught the game is over. THEY MUST CONFESS OF BEING A PASTER ONCE CAUGHT. know i know this game sounds bad with communists and all but the kids love it and you can adapt it to fit your needs. i took a pole with my jr. highers and sr. highers at the church and they all loved this game the best even the girls who usually don't want to play much of anything to effence. please write me about your results.god bless Brian truxaw

149. Gag in the Bag Submitted by: on January 10, 2000
Materials: lunch sack, gross foods, garbage can, and ball
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: Under 5 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Start by playing some music and starting to toss a ball around. When the music stops whoever has the ball has to come up and pick an item out of the lunch sack. What's in the lunch sack? Well, the grossest foods you can think of (spinach babyfood, spam, pickled pigs feet, sardines, you get the idea). And when a food is brought out that person has to eat (or drink) it in an allotted time limit (30 seconds is good). If they pull it off, then they get a prize (candy, pop, etc). You can also have a good food in there for the lucky ones. Make sure a garbage can is nearby for those that can't stomach the food. After the person finishes the food, or barfs, start the music up again and keep passing the ball. (If you have a camera nearby you can get some of the coolest photographs)

150. Cube of Wettness Submitted by: on January 10, 2000
Materials: Little kid's cube that has shapes to put in
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: Under 5 minutes    Cost: $0.00

This is a game that my youth pastor plays with us occasionally.

Get a couple volunteer to do the game.

Then give them one of those children's cubes, the yellow ones with 3 shapes cut out of each side, and with a flip top lid.

Give one of the kids a squirt gun (Super Soakers work great).

And have the other one sit down on a stool.

Set a time limit for them to dump all the shapes in their lap and put them back through the holes. (45-60 seconds usually works best)

Get some music started (Mission Impossible's what my youth pastor uses) and have them start.

If some of the shapes fall on the floor, put them back on their laps.

If the kid doesn't get all of the shapes in the holes in the time limit, then the other guy gets to squirt him!

Then they switch.

Other than a super soaker my youth pastor has also used a pie in the face and "The Hot Seat" (a seat that shocks you with a 9 volt battery). You get the idea

151. Crab soccer Submitted by: on January 10, 2000
Materials: grubs, mud, people, earth ball
Messy Rating: Don't wear good clothes     Duration: 20-40 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Get people in teams, when I played there was 4 teams (also 500 people were there), they can be as big as wanted. 4-8 people are allowed to play at a time. You crawl around in a big mud pit trying to score against the other team(s). What makes it hard is that you are playing with a huge earth ball in a slippery mud pit. The objects of the game are to get as muddy as possible, score the most, and have the best team spirit. This is a great camp game!

152. Hand Soccer Submitted by: on January 8, 2000
Materials: 4 cones, a Soccer (or) Dodge Ball
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 20-40 minutes    Cost: $0.00

This is a game that I played with my youth and they loved it. Place two cones about 7-8 ft. apart from each other just as if it was a goal. Place the other two on the other side of the field. You can determine the distance you want them apart. Split the teams evenly. If they can not be split up evenly, you may have a "neutral" player. The neutral player is on both teams. The object of the game is to throw the ball between the cones, or whatever you choose to use, without going over the goalie's head. After a team scores, the other team goes towards the other goal. This is non-stop until your youth get tired, or until you get tired. Whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins.
Win you have the ball, you cannot run after you get tagged by the other team. If you get tagged, you have to shoot from where you are standing. But the object is not to get tagged, and keep passing the ball to your teammate until a player has an open shot.
To make the game more exciting. With larger groups, have more than one ball.
Gook Luck!!

153. Spoons Submitted by: on January 6, 2000
Materials: metal spoons and a deck of playing cards
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Arrange players in a circle sitting on floor. (4-12 players is recommended) Place spoons in the middle of the circle with their ends touching (have one less spoon for the number of players). Deal everyone two cards. Then the dealer takes one card from the top of the deck and if he/she doesn't want or need it he/she passes it on to the next player in a clockwise manner. The first player to get four of a kind grabs a spoon. The player who doesn't get a spoon is out of the game. Play resumes with one less player and one less spoon. Play continues until there is only one player left, the winner. I recommend not playing with plastic spoons because they might break and injure someone. I also suggest that all watches, rings, bracelets, etc. should be removed to prevent injury.

154. Fruit Submitted by: on January 6, 2000
Materials: foam bat, pillow or roll of paper towels
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 20-40 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Arrange players in a circle (sitting on floor or in chairs). 6-15 players required (more than 15 gets very difficult). Assign each player the name of a fruit (apple, orange, banana, etc.) Have one player stand in the middle of the circle "IT". Decide on one of the players sitting to start the game by saying, "Apple loves... (one of the other players assigned name)" Example: "Apple loves orange." Then Orange has to say, "Orange loves banana.", before "IT" hits him or her in the head with the foam bat, pillow or paper towels. If "IT" hits that player before he or she gets the saying out, he or she becomes "IT". If a player says the name of fruit that "IT" is assigned, then he or she becomes "IT".

"HINT" When assigning names, only say the names once so to make the game more difficult and stress that players do not point to those who are called on while playing.

The game can last as long as you can stand it. My group will play it for hours.

155. Concussion Submitted by: on December 28, 1999
Materials: squishy ball that won't hurt anyone
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

This game sounds much more dangerous than it really is. Obviously if you play with a bowling ball this will hurt a little bit more, so be sure to select a ball that will not hurt at all to be hit with (egg. a foam ball, or a light gator skin ball).
The object of the game is to have the most points at the end of the allotted time. Points are scored by working as a group to pass the ball around and hit the individual in the middle of the circle in the head, or by being the individual in the middle of the circle and lasting a full minute with out being hit.
To play, have the group sit in a large circle on the floor. Choose one individual to begin in the middle (you will usually have many volunteers for this). Have the person in the middle lie on their back. The game begins when the leader (who also keeps time and score) tosses the ball to any kid in the circle and the group begins trying to peg the person in the middle in the head. The ball can (and should) be passed quickly around or across the circle to set up better shots. The person in the middle can defend themselves using only their feet. If they use a hand or arm to block a thrown ball, it counts as a hit and they are out. Who ever is in the middle can spin and dodge, but may not use hands, sit up, or roll over. The round ends when the kid in the middle gets hit in the head, uses an illegal technique, or lasts a full minute without being hit in the head. When the round ends, allow the person in the middle to select the next contestant. Of course, no one can go twice until everyone has gone once.
Points are scored as follows: 1 point for an assist (the pass immediately preceding a hit), 2 points for a hit (or for the throw that causes a disqualification), and 4 points for surviving the middle for a full minute.
If you use the right ball and encourage teamwork this can be a game that kids beg to play week after week.

156. Swamp Crossing Submitted by: on December 13, 1999
Materials: construction paper
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Divide group into two teams. Give each team 3 "rocks" (construction paper cutouts about 1 1/2' x 1 1/2'). Make a start and finish line (maybe 30 feet apart) and tell them that they must get their whole team across without touching the water, using only these rocks to get across. They may move the rocks as they go, however, only one foot can be on a rock at a time. A cool puzzle to try and figure out! Great for building cooperation skills!

157. Goin' On A Picnic Submitted by: on December 13, 1999
Materials: nothing
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

The leader explains to the group that he is going on a picnic, and any of them can come along with him...provided they bring the something appropriate with them. The leader starts by saying his name and one thing he will bring...for example, my name is Tim and I'm bringing some tea to the picnic. Each person playing the game must then do the same thing, and the leader will tell him or her whether or not he or she can come. The trick is, a person can only come if the thing they are bringing begins with the same first letter as their name. Go around the circle until everyone has figured it out.

158. Chair Balloon Ball Submitted by: on December 13, 1999
Materials: balloons
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $2.00

A non-carpeted floor is the best surface for this game. Divide the students up into two even teams and have each team choose a goalie. Have the goalies sit across from one another at each end of the playing area. These are not traditional goalies, their job is to get the balloon and sit on it before the other team counts to three (loudly). The rest of the players all have their own chair that they can not get out of. The game style is similar to soccer but each player moves around the room in a chair and uses their free hand to hit the balloon and their other hand to hold onto the chair. The teams play offense and defense and score when their goalie (who is on the other end of the playing area) pops a balloon. note to leader: have each kid blow up one balloon before you get started, the game moves fast.

159. Airplane Blitz Submitted by: on December 13, 1999
Materials: paper
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Bring a stack of copier paper and let the kids make lots and lots of paper airplanes. Then you need some way to clearly divide the room in half. (The taller the divider the better.) A couch works, but even better was a rolling chalk board. Put half the kids on each side of the divider. Put half the paper airplanes on each side of the divider. Explain that they can only throw ONE plane at a time and they must stop when the leader says "stop". Say "Go". They throw the airplanes over the divider as fast as they can. Planes are flying in both directions. Let them go about 3 minutes. Give them a ten second warning and then say "stop". Count the airplanes on each side of the divider. The team with the least number of planes wins. Repeat it a number of times, keeping track of the wins to get the champions.
A quicker variation: Throw a big bag of loose socks.

160. Chain Tag Submitted by: on December 13, 1999
Materials: nothing
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: Under 5 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Like normal tag, but when a person is caught they must hold the hand of the person who caught them. You therefore, end up with a 'chain'. Only The people at each end of the chain can tag someone.
