101. King Ugum Bugum Submitted by: on May 23, 2000
Materials: 2 brooms, 2 chairs, one wet wash cloth
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 20-40 minutes    Cost: $0.00

align two chairs facing one another with approximately 3 feet between the two. Select one person to be King Ugum Bugum, one person to be host, one person to be the holder of the wet wash cloth and as many candidates as you can accomodate. This game does require atleast 10 people. After selecting your candidates, have your host take them outside of the main room. Have your King sit in one of the two chairs and place the keeper of the wet wash cloth behind the chair that faces the King. The rest of the group should sit in the floor making a circle around the two chairs. While the candidates are outside, have the King direct the rest of the group to practice their chant, "Ugum Bugum", stressing each syllable and repeating at various speeds. The chant should sound somewhat tribal and can vary in pace. The King should device some hand motion to end the chant. I personally make a stern look on my face and draw a horizontal line with my hand to end the chant. While the group is chanting have the host bring in a candidate (leaving the rest out of the main room) and place him/her standing in front of the chair facing King Ugum Bugum. The King gives his que to end the chant and says, "Me King Ugum Bugum, Welcome to my land. Rumor states that you want to join my tribe, but to join my tribe you must do as I do." (King is holding both brooms, one in each hand and hands one to the candidate) "Take broom, follow me" The King begins his chant "Ugum Bugum" (the others join in) and makes movements with the broom with each emphatic syllable. The movements should only include two or three movements per "Ugum Bugum". The King does his movements with the first "Ugum Bugum" and the candidate follows with the next "Ugum Bugum". The chant starts slow and increases in pace as the repitions continue. During the movements, the King should sit down a few times and have the candidate follow. After a minute or two, the keeper of the wet wash cloth (which should be hidden up to this point) will place the wet cloth on the seat of the candidates chair. The candidate sits on the wet cloth and makes a great face of surprise and the group cheers with glee. Continue with the same for each candidate. The first candidate will join the tribe for the following candidates. It is a lot of fun, but be sure not to select candidates who are timid or might be hurt by the embarassment of sitting on the wet cloth.

102. The Brave and the Sweet Submitted by: on May 16, 2000
Materials: Lots of patches, needle, thread, and blindfolds
Messy Rating: Special Considerations     Duration: Under 5 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Everyone can be involved, or you can just ask for volunteers. I usually ask for about 10 "very brave" male volunteers - of course there are lots of hands. Then I ask for 10 "good homemaker" female volunteers - again lots of hand. Then I present to everyones attention a patch and a threaded needle which I give to each girl. I explain that each girl should bend one knee and that each fellow should lean completely over that knee (a chair can be used if there may be complaints about the intimate contact). I explain that this will be a race to see which girl can complete the sewing of the patch on all four sides to the seat of the fellow's pants - lots of groans and laughter. Then I present the blindfolds for the girls - some of the fellows run to hide!
Actually, it turns out all right to the laughter of everyone. A terribly sewn patch shouldn't be the winner.

103. The Impossible Game Submitted by: Ian Greene on May 15, 2000
Materials: big rubber band balloons, regular baloons
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $10.00

Inflate the balloons, put the rubberbands on the ends, inflate the regular balloons. Have groups of 5 stand in a circle, give every player a rubber band balloon. Than drop the regular balloon in to the center of the circle. The object of the game is to keep the regular balloon in the air by hitting it with the rubber band balloon. Our youth have done this game for the past two years at our 30 hr. famine, and it never worked but what happens is the biggest balloon war you could ever have.( To make it even harder, like it needed it, try turning the lights on and off) Your group will get a real kick out of this, promise.

105. BIBLE BALLOON Submitted by: on May 6, 2000
Materials: beach ball or balloon
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

The idea of the game is to keep the ball in the air. Every time someone hits it they must FIRST (or at the same time)name a name from the Bible.Indoors use a balloon.Outdoors use a beach ball.I allow repeats and of course you'll NEVER get stumped if you call JESUS

106. Train Wreck Submitted by: on April 21, 2000
Materials: Chairs
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Have two rows of chairs, one less then the number of people playing. Number off the chairs, so that evens are on one side, and odds on the other. The person who is it, stands in front, and calls out numbers, or something of that sort, to the whole "Train." Those numbers then have to get up and switch with another person. The person in front trys to get in one of the open seats. If "it" succeeds, the person left standing is it. Start out with only calling out two numbers, but let it get harder as it goes along (three, four, seven, etc... different numbers called out. Or any number divisible by three! Cruel things like that) To keep it lively, the people do not keep their numbers, the chairs do. After they switch chairs, they have to figure out what their new number is. Also, to keep everyone moving, the person in front can yell, "Train Wreck!" At which point every one gets up and runs to a different chair.

107. traffic light revised Submitted by: on April 20, 2000
Materials: 9 paper plates
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

First lay the plates out in a line far enough apert to have people stand on them. Then place 8 people on them, facing the middle one which is open like so L L L L O R R R R.
The object is to get them entire sides to slip without leaving the paper plates. There's more, they cannot jump a member of their side who faces the same way, they have to take turn (L then R and then L and so forth), and they can only jump one person at a time. Last, they cannot backtrack and must start over when no one can move. Here's the answer sheet for those keeping score, it's long so bear with me.

This is the only answer to this problem. They cannot move out of line to see the full picture, they can't turn around(only with their head) and as one or more get the answer, if they get it too soon, you can handicap them so that they cannot talk or whatever. Thiw makes the rest of the group have to figure it out too. The discussion afterwards can be roles people play in life (idea person, shy and distant, sheep and follows orders, or whatever). With handicapped people, ask them how they felt not being able to help the group at all. Great discussion out of it.

112. Do you love your neighbor Submitted by: on April 4, 2000
Materials: chairs
Messy Rating: Special Considerations     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

You will need one less chair than you have "yutz". (ie. 15 "yutz" 14 chairs) Assemble all the chairs in a circle, all yutz but 1 sit in a chair the one left stands in the middle and asks someone in a chair "do you love your neighbor?" If the person who was asked says "YES", EVERYBODY gets up out of their chair and must move at least more than one chair than where they were. If the person who was asked says "NO", the one standing in the middles says "WHO DO YOU LOVE?" Then the person who was asked has to say the names of two other people in the circle who are not his neighbors. Then those two that were called, the two who are beside the person who was asked, and the one who was standing in the middle all have to get out of their chair and find another. Variations: the person asked says, "NO, I love all the people who are wearing tennis shoes." etc.....
The "last person standing" then is the one who asks someone else if they love their neighbor. "GET READY FOR SOME PRETTY PHYSICAL STUFF!!!!"

114. human battleship Submitted by: on March 28, 2000
Materials: large divider, masking tape, water gun, one cream pie and 2 overhead projectors
Messy Rating: Need a towel or two     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: ($5.00)

this game is blast for any age and any sizes over 25.
split the group up by guys/girls and have a male leader facilitate the guys and a girl leader do the same for the ladies. before the game, make 2 large charts on the floor with masking tape, similar to that on the game battleship. place the divider in between the two charts and make another chart for the hits and misses on a transparency and overhead. have 3 guys/ 3 girls act as a battleship, 3 each as a sub, 2 as a cruiser and 4 as a carrier.
place each ship group on a chosen section (ex. a1, a2, a3; or c3, d3, e3) just like the game. put all of the remaining guys on one side of the curtain and have the guy leader call out a spot trying to "sink" the girls ships on the other side and the girls try the same with the guy's team. when the guy misses, its the girl's turn.if it is a hit have the leader with the water gun blast the person standing on the called square. make sure to have a leader on each side mark each team's hits and misses on the transparency so you do forget the ones you've called.
when one team has bombed all the other's ships they win. when i played against the female intern at our church the girl's team won and she got to smash me in the face with a pie. the kids loved it.

115. BeanBall Basketball Submitted by: on March 25, 2000
Materials: 1 beanbag, and two buckets
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 20-40 minutes    Cost: $0.00

INSTRUCTIONS: In this game you put one of the buckets on one one one side of the basketball court and the other one on the other side. this game is like regular basketball but with buckets.
In this game you will need two teams of at least 4-5 players(it works best that way). In the gameplay you can't run when you have the beanbag in your hand, but your friends can run. So you have to pass the beanbag back and forth to get the beanbag in the other teams bucket. If you toss the beanbag and it lands in the bucket, but it knoks the bucket over, you will have to see if the beanbag is still in the in the bucket if not the team does not get the point. The team that at least has gotten 5 goals is the team that wins.

116. Christians and Romans Submitted by: on March 22, 2000
Materials: couple flashlights, night time, dark surrondings, a tired parent
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 20-40 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Make sure the lights are all out. You first determine how many Romans you need (About one for every 10-15 people playing, but at least two) They are trying to find the Christians. The parent goes out to a well hidden place in the church, and stays there with a small, weak flashlight. After the adult is in place, the Christians go out and try to find it. If they find the Light, they can stay there or get more people to the light. The Romans all have flashlights (no one else does except for the parent.) They are trying to capture the Christians and bring them to jail, where they wait until a determined time has passed (your choice on how long, but no longer than 5 min.) The Romans use the flashlights to capture the Christians. This is on the honor system. If a Christian has already found the light, and they are caught, they die and are out. The object of the game is to get everyone to the light. To make it more interedting, have a random guard be a "close to conversion." If a Christian wants to get away from a guard, they witness to them, and the guard can, if they so choose, look the other way and let them go. Roman guards cannot guard the jail, or the light, or they are thrown in jail. For extra rules or questions e-mail me at johngrotts@yahoo.com

117. Break-In Submitted by: on March 15, 2000
Materials: 2 flashlights
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 40+minutes    Cost: $0.00

Before the game, create a clue that leads to the loot and the loot. Choose a jailer and 2 "security guards." The guards each get a flashlight. Send the rest of the players outside. Turn off all the lights, except in the room assigned as the jail.

The object is for the players to "break-in" to the church (we just leave all the outside doors cracked for them to come through) and find the clue to lead them to the loot. If a security guard shines his light on a player, they are sent to jail. The jailer must keep them in there for 5 minutes, then they may start from outside again. Another player can also cause a jailbreak by sneeking into the room from the inside of the church and freeing everybody. The jailmates must start from outside again.

A player wins when he finds the loot. (We just use a piece of paper with an X on it).

Our kids ask to play this almost every week!

118. 3 Ball Soccer Submitted by: on March 10, 2000
Website: http://www.davidschurch.org
Materials: Two Goals, 3 different color balls
Messy Rating: Clean up/Cool down     Duration: 20-40 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Simply Count everyone off by two's as if you were playing soccer with even teams. Make sure you count the girls/guys seperately to ensure even teams.
One ball represents the guys only, another ball the girls, and the third ball is co-ed. To make this an extra zinger...allow them to carry the balls for three steps and throw it.
My group loves this!
In smaller rooms where kicking a ball is n't cool exchange them for a frisbee!

119. Toilet Paper Get-To-Know-You Submitted by: on March 8, 2000
Materials: Roll or two of TP
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

A very simple game. Sitting in a circle as a group, pass around a roll of TP and tell kids to rip off at least 3, but as many as they want, squares from the roll. Some kids will take only three if the leader takes three, so leaders take your squares first and tak a fair amount (e.g., 10). Each person then has a turn (go around the circle) and must tell the rest of the group something about themselves for every square they ripped off the roll. E.g., my name is Tom (rip), I like hockey (rip), I have three sisters and a brother (rip), etc... The only mess is a bunch of TP squares that need to be picked up after the game is over.

120. Watermelon Football Submitted by: on March 7, 2000
Materials: Med. size watermelons
Messy Rating: Don't wear good clothes     Duration: 40+minutes    Cost: $0.00

You need med. size watermelons, preferrably not rotten ones, a grassy area, and two teams. We just divide our group in half, but make it fair,(Not all guys on one team, or all athletes on one team). You have to mark your outof bounds areas (we used spray paint), and then you just play tackle football. You have to play tackle, or no one would get dirty. This is very messy, and we usually end up just seeing who we can get the messiest, or who hasn't gotten messy yet, and then of course we get them messy. We have a annualy playing of this game now. We would like to challenge the parents vs. the youth group, but I don't know if they would go for that. Have a great time with this game.
