Don't let the language deceive you into thinking that articles and ads offer anything of value in terms of how to do real youth ministry. It may be the best the world has to offer, but it pales in comparison to the hope that Jesus offers. Take Jesus to your young people -- and nothing less.
For centuries, contemporary Christian music has been the subject of controversy. It's referred to as anything from mind control to the Devil's own music. From traditional chants, psalms, and hymns to the Christian rock, metal, and rap styles of today, forefront Christian music has and always will bring on some form of discord. Yet today, modern Christian music styles have proven popularity and positive effectiveness.
The term witch-hunt is reminiscent of the Salem witch trials, when well-meaning so-called Christians were caught up in hysteria over the possibility that certain members of the community were in cahoots with Satan. The result of that hysteria brought about dark days that did only harm to the name of Jesus.
It was never my passion to have a big youth group. My focus has always been on individual growth rather than the numbers. That is why it was so amazing to me when I saw this group of twelve become a group of seventy-five in about two years.
Have you ever preached a zero-impact-at-ground-zero sermon? Let me explain what I mean. Ground zero is the point at which an explosion originated. If a bomb is dropped - ground zero is where it hit. When we as pastors preach or when a Bible teacher teaches - ground zero should be our own life. The effect of the sermon or lesson will relate directly to the impact that sermon or lesson had on the one giving it. Let me put it this way - you can't teach what you don't know, and if it hasn't impacted you, any passion you try to put into a message will be purely manufactured passion.
