Youth Ministry Games : Church House

1. Church House Submitted by: on July 23, 1998
Materials: Everyone needs a chair except "it"
Messy Rating: No Sweat     Duration: 5-20 minutes    Cost: $0.00

Everyone makes a large circle with their chairs and sits down except one person in the middle called "it" who has no chair. (make the circle large with plenty of room between chairs). Everyone is given a number that they must remember throughout the game including "it".Start the numbers at 1 and number off until everyone has a number. The object of the game is for "it" to get a seat.To do this the person in the middle calls out 2 or more numbers or he may say "church house" in which everyone must find a new chair. When "it" has finished calling all his numbers, then the people whose numbers were called out must move to a new chair."It" then has an opportunity to get a chair. If he is successful then there will be a new person who is "It".If he is not then "It" tries again until he gets a chair. The game is then repeated over and over until the time limited is reached.

The object is to see who will never be "it".Youth can have a strategy for those who are hard to get "it" (try to remember each others numbers, but don't tell yours!)

Rules are: 1) If your number is called out you MUST find a new chair. You can't go back to that chair until there's a new "It". 2) There should be no tackling or ruff housing, but the person with the most fanny on the chair gets the chair.

After about 10 to 15 minutes of playing the game suggest that you want to make things even more interesting by doing this: put all the chairs in groups of 2.Each person will now have a partner. They will need to hold hands, arms, or whatever to keep up with their partner. You must move with your partner and keep up with them at all times.Try not to get separated from them. Give each pair a new number to remember starting with 1 (number each pair). There will be one pair in the middle who is "it".They call out 2 or more numbers or "church house" and must find a pair of chairs to sit in.Remember the most fanny in the chairs gets that pair of chairs and if a couple get separated they are "it" unless they can get more fanny on the chairs.

You could even do 3's - triplets!

Instead of numbers assigned to each person you could use "Books of the Bible", old or new testament. Can be very helpful in learning the books of the Bible.

This game is highly fun and will want to be played over and over so don't wear it out - stick to a time limit and suggest playing it again at another time. Better if game is played by singles and then changed to couples or triplets.
