Microsoft's "Where Do You Want To Go Today?" campaign is starting to make me physically ill. I chose to write this article about 4 hours before I read the following:
"Navigator users who try to enter Entertaindom's [Warner Brothers] cool content from the Web are told the following: "You're almost there! You must first download Microsoft Explorer 4.0."
- NEWS.COM
(This page has since been revamped to require any browser capable of using the flash plug-in.)
Microsoft is beginning to develop their own version of the WWW, MSW. You'll notice that there is only 1 "W" and the WORLD WIDE has been dropped. (Did you realize that Microsoft owns the trademark on the word "web"? It's true. They bought out the company that originally licensed it.)
The whole mission of the internet was to make information readily available to everyone. My mission was to design YouthPastor.Com so it could be accessed by everyone regardless of web browser by using only "standard" HTML, lots of server-side applications, and very little Java (for the sake of speed, not incompatability.)
Microsoft delivered one of their worst products when they released IE 4.0. It doesn't work with "standard" forms, it's email corrupts our mail server, it only contains 60% of Javascript, and doesn't work with a lot of java currently available. (Did you notice that they took all the Java out of their webpages... it was because they knew their website wasn't viewable with their new "upgraded" browser.) If you haven't already found out the hard way, Internet Explorer does not work properly with YouthPastor.Com and I've removed all MS logos from the website. (Sorry.)
Special Note:AOL's browser is made by Microsoft. I've tried real hard to make all pages AOL compatible and now I'm not sure that they are anymore.
Ok. Enough talk about Microsoft. I only mention the Evil Empire and their product because it makes Netscape's Communicator 4.03 look that much better.
Did you know that Netscape Communicator is FREE? That is, if you are "a student, faculty member or staff member of an educational institution (K-12, junior college, college or university, or the international equivalent, or a library), a staff member of a religious organization or an employee of an organization which meets Licensor's criteria for a charitable non-profit organization; or (b) your use of the Software is for the purpose of evaluating whether to purchase an ongoing license to the Software." Basically, if you are a youth pastor, you can use it for FREE! Read Netscape's License Agreement for more info.
